Goodreads : Young, beautiful and deadly. Trained as an assassin by the god of Death, Ismae is sent to the court of Brittany, where she finds herself under prepared - not only for the games of intrigue and treason, but for the impossible choices she must make. For how can she deliver Death’s vengeance upon a target who, against her will, has stolen her heart?
My review : I loved this book so much ! It's a very very good fantasy book ! When I heard that this book was going to be about warrior nuns in a medieval era in Britanny... I knew I was going to read it !
The beginning was not what I was expecting though. The whole daughter of the god of death thing was weird. I was disappointed by the beginning it was pretty easy and predictable. But it is just the first 50 pages or so. I started loving the book when she left the covent with Duval !
I loved the historical context of the book : 15 century France. The characters are so interesting. Ismae, Duval, De Lornay, Beast, Isabeau, and Anne. I loved them all ! The characters are growing and evolving so much through the book.
The romance is not the main focus of the book but it is beautiful !! This romance is sexy and wonderful without being chessy and cliché. I loved the fact that she had to pretend to be Duval's mistress. It was often really funny.
It's a wonderful fantasy book. There is political maneuvering, intrigue, romance.
But it is also a reflexion on death and how it can show mercy sometimes and I learned a lot from this book.
It can be read as a standalone and that's amazing since there is so many series out there.
The second book Dark Triumph stars a different character and I can't wait to read it.
I'm just in love with this type of books. I think historical fantasy books are the best !

Great review! So glad you liked this, Marie. I've been meaning to read it for awhile now.

ReplyDeleteThis is one of my favorite books that I've read this year. I too, was a bit unsure in the beginning but loved it. I liked that it was mysterious, funny and romantic. I loved Duval so much. Beast was also a favorite character of mine. I loved him so.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for the next installment either. I hope it is as good, if not better than Grave Mercy.
