Rating : 5 / 5
Goodreads : Laurel now knows the truth: Yuki is a rare Winter faerie, the most powerful—and deadly—of all, and she is working with Klea to conquer and destroy Avalon. With Tamani, David, and Chelsea by her side, Laurel prepares for a fight she never thought she would have to face. Filled with heart-pounding action, sweeping romance, and higher stakes at every turn, Destined is the series conclusion that readers have been clamoring for—with a twist that will leave them breathless.
My review : Be careful there are spoilers at the end of this review !
This is one of the first YA series that I kept following even before I started this bookblog. Now that i'm reading this last book almost three years after the first one this series can seems a little... childish (with the trolls and all that stuff) and not as good as all the other YA books that I've read since I discovered it but I don't care this series means a lot for me and I enjoyed reading Destined as much as I enjoyed reading the first three books. And this is it. This is the fourth and last book in the series and it's really hard to say goodbye to a series that you've grown to love... I was a little surprised when I received the book because this fourth book is quite short compared to the third one. The third book ended on a cliffhanger and the beginning of Destined takes place right after this end. The time span of the plot also surprised me because the whole book focus on not even two days. But I wasn't disappointed. Aprilynne Pike gave us a wonderful and dramatic end to this series and I couldn't be happier. It's a book full of actions, excitement, hope, friendship, heartbreak. I couldn't stop reading it because it's really fast-paced. Destined is basically about this epic battle taking place in Avalon. It reminded me of the end of Harry Potter and the deathly hallows when the war is taking place at Hogwarts. I was really happy to see that the Arthurian legend was again mentionned in this one. We even have Excalibur this time ! In the three first books I wasn't fond of the "humans" (David and Chelsea) but in this last book I liked them. I realized how much brave and loyal they are to Laurel. I really didn't like David before. He is a nice guy but he was just ridiculous according to me and in Destined he really impressed me ! And now I need to talk about the end so there is going to be spoilers I can't avoid it.
I'm so happy. I love this ending. I was really afraid because I've been waiting for it for such a long time. It is a happy ending but all the characters deserved it after such a book filled with war, pain and death. And we can see that it's an open ending. Marion is not supported at the end and Yasmine will be here in the future to change Avalon with the help of Laurel as Jamison planned it all along. After 4 books we finally know who Lauren chooses. The triangle couple is one of the main point of this series so I was excited to see which boy would be with Laurel. And... i'm happy because it's the character that I loved all along. Tamani is my favorite character of this series since the beginning. Since the third book we even have chapters with his point of view. She finally realizes that he is important for her and that she loves him when she nearly loses him in this war. For me it was obvious that they were meant to be together. This scene that I was waiting for so long was sweet and cute. What's great is that Aprilynne Pike succeeded in maintaining suspence around this triangle couple in the 4 books !
But Aprilynne Pike also did something amazing with this book. She changed my vision of David. And after three books of not liking that much a character it's huge ! As I've said he already impressed me through the book. And then I finally understood his character and his role thanks to the author's note and this last chapter called The Last Word which is a letter that David wrote to Chelsea. David has this great hero role in Destined. He fights with Excalibur. He is like a modern King Arthur. It's about this simple human boy discovering faeries and how this would change his vision of the world. Chelsea has always loved all this fairy tale stuff so she is excited to discover Avalon. But David is a scientist and meeting Laurel and then going to Avalon in this last book changed his world. And I loved the letter at the end. His decision is beautiful it shows weakness to overcome such knowledge and it is very realistic.
I was disappointed by just one little thing. Something was missing for me. I would have liked to know more about Tamani and Laurel at the end but especially I was waiting for something because I really thought since the beginning of the series that the author would mention it at end. I would have liked that Laurel remembers her childhood memories in Avalon with Tamani. But anyway it's just one little thing.
It's so weird to think that this series is over now after almost three years. I didn't know what to do with myself after I finished the book. It was such a good story and I would cherish it forever. It's alway hard to finish a series. Everytime it's like a part of my sould has been ripped...
I've spend amazing moments reading these books, amazing memories attached to these books since high school and university now. I even cried at the end of the second one Spells and I almost never cry reading books so it means that this series is really important for me. Thank you Aprilynne Pike.
