What if you knew exactly when you would die?
Thanks to modern science, every human being has become a ticking genetic time bomb—males only live to age twenty-five, and females only live to age twenty. In this bleak landscape, young girls are kidnapped and forced into polygamous marriages to keep the population from dying out.
When sixteen-year-old Rhine Ellery is taken by the Gatherers to become a bride, she enters a world of wealth and privilege. Despite her husband Linden's genuine love for her, and a tenuous trust among her sister wives, Rhine has one purpose: to escape—to find her twin brother and go home.
But Rhine has more to contend with than losing her freedom. Linden's eccentric father is bent on finding an antidote to the genetic virus that is getting closer to taking his son, even if it means collecting corpses in order to test his experiments. With the help of Gabriel, a servant Rhine is growing dangerously attracted to, Rhine attempts to break free, in the limted time she has left.
Review : First off, i'm not a huge fan of dystopian novels... Ok I love the hunger games series and I really want to read Divergent but it's not the kind of books that I want to read every day and that i'm so keen of. This year i'm in the mood to read more contemporary novels... But anyway that's not the point ! I've bought this book last week end in Paris at WH Smith. I was so surprised because it was there 5 days before its release so I was happy to read it before tuesday. I didn't know what to expect of this book before starting reading it. It was a good book but I didn't loved it... I don't know how to express my feelings about this book actually...
The author has created a disturbing world, depicting one of his worse possible outcomes.
Wither is a dystopian book about a new world in which a virus affects all people so they die at 25 (men) and 20 (women) and were life is just kind of artificial.
Can you imagine living with the knowledge of your death and knowing exactly when it would happen? This makes me really uneasy in a bad kind of way... I think this book scared me...
But also the idea of polygamous marriages in the hopes of re-populating the earth and having the point of view of one of the wives in a polygamous marriage was... unsettling... I've never read a book like that!Rhine was the king of strong and brave female character that you expect to find in dystopian novels. The good point of this book for me is Gabriel ! I loved his character.
I didn't really like the writing. There is a LOT of repetitions and that was annoying...
I think for those who love dystopian novels they'll love this book but Wither wasn't for me. I don't think i'm going to read the rest of the series...

It's too bad you didn't like it as much as you were hoping to .. I guess I'll read it but I won't buy in the next weeks, that's for sure ..
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you on this review. This book was quite unsettling and disturbing. It creeped me out and pulled me out of my comfort zone. I will say this though, just like the hunger games they wrote it in a way that I was not completely turned off.
ReplyDeleteMy initial rating for my book was going to be like a 3- 3 1/2, but I realized I couldn't put the book down because I needed to see how it ended. I think the reason I rated it a 4 is because I accepted the book for what it is. I think for the dystopian genre and the topic it was a great book, even though it's not favorite topic or genre to read about.
great review and thanks again for stopping by my blog.
Well I just posted that I was looking forward to your review of this one and then somehow I missed it, LOL! This is one of those books it seems people really like or they don't. Probably just going to have to read it for myself and see where I fall. Thanks for the honest review!
ReplyDeleteJ'aime les livres dystopiques! Il me tarde de lire celui-ci! Merci pour ton avis sincère :)
ReplyDeleteThat's to bad you didn't enjoy Wither. I fell in love with it, did you like or read Delirium yet?
ReplyDeleteI finally read this book this month. In recent years I have realized that I love the dytopian genre. I agree that many layers of the novel were disturbing, but I guess that is typical for the genre. I will definitely want to read the other two in the trilogy. I did not notice the annoying repetitions that you mentioned. Reading your comment made me wonder what you were referring to. I guess that is an example of the amazing reading process and how reading the same book is a different experience for each reader.
ReplyDeleteI hope that you have enjoyed the rest of the books you have been reading this year more!
I liked Wither but I didn't love it.
ReplyDeleteThe end sucks!
I wish Rhine had accepted her wife-duty and stayed with Linden. It would have been interesting to see how she would have managed to live that life... The run away disappointed me :( I liked the idea, the plan, but she shouldn't have been able to make it concrete ><'
And I don't like Gabriel.
I'm going to read the next book anayway - I'm way too curious.
