Ruby Red by Kerstin Gier

Rating : 5 / 5

Goodreads : Gwyneth Shepherd's sophisticated, beautiful cousin Charlotte has been prepared her entire life for traveling through time. But unexpectedly, it is Gwyneth who in the middle of class takes a sudden spin to a different era!
Gwyneth must now unearth the mystery of why her mother would lie about her birth date to ward off suspicion about her ability, brush up on her history, and work with Gideon—the time traveler from a similarly gifted family that passes the gene through its male line, and whose presence becomes, in time, less insufferable and more essential. Together, Gwyneth and Gideon journey through time to discover who, in the 18th century and in contemporary London, they can trust.
Kerstin Gier's Ruby Red is young adult novel full of fantasy and romance.

My review : Red Ruby is the first book of the trilogy. I first heard about this book in 2010 when it was published in English (because originally this is a german book). I can’t believe I waited that long to read it. But I’m glad I finally decided to start that series last week (because I had the first two books on my kindle). I was almost sure that I would love these books because of its theme : time traveling. I love books that have to do with time traveling, books that include flashbacks to different historal periods. For exemple the series Immortal Beloved by Cate Tiernan is one of my favorite on that subject. It doesn't deal with time travelings but the heroine is an immortal and she is telling her story, so the reader is following her through different time periods. I’ve always loved reading and writing about that.
Here the time traveling thing is really well developed. The world is complex but really well thought with the circle, this sort of secret society, the different families of time traveler (the female and male line). I was intrigued by the sort of poem that gives a summaries of the 12 different time travelers with their gemstone associated to it.
How awesome is this time traveling thing anyway? It has its negative points but come on I would love to go back to different historical periods, wearing different clothes and dresses according to the era. It was so cool reading about this I whished the whole time that I was Gwen (how do you pronounce her name?). And you can meet your ancestors !!! I really liked the idea that when you travel back in time you're at the same spot where you are standing in the present.
From the start I loved the heroine and her crazy family. I loved the atmosphere of her big house, they all live together. Another thing that I loved about the heroine is her ability of talking to ghosts and gargoyles. I’ve written a lot of stories dealing with that and I thought it was nicely done here.
About the whole time traveling thing the characters are going back to the past, and it sometimes gave me headaches just thinking about that. It must be sp difficult for an author to write such a story, her outline must be crazy. Past, present and future are blending together which makes the plot even more difficult to follow but it's exciting for the reader.
The book is really fast-paced, with lots of dialogues and it’s really addicting from the start.
It’s been a long time now since I’ve fallen in love with a YA series I recently discovered. The books I loved since the beginning of 2014 were mostly follow up of series I had previously started so it felt so great discovering a new books and obsessing over it. It’s these little moments like that when you discover a series you love that makes my life worth living, and that makes me love being a reader.

About the movie Ruby Red : It’s a german movie that came out last year but you can find it in English on the internet. There are of course a lot of things that made me cringe from the beginning but it was nice seeing this book I love transformed into a movie. However I couldn’t finish it because there were spoilers about the third book so be careful people !
