Goodreads : In the City of Lights, two star-crossed lovers battle a fate that is destined to tear them apart again and again for eternity.
When Kate Mercier's parents die in a tragic car accident, she leaves her life--and memories--behind to live with her grandparents in Paris. For Kate, the only way to survive her pain is escaping into the world of books and Parisian art. Until she meets Vincent.
Mysterious, charming, and devastatingly handsome, Vincent threatens to melt the ice around Kate's guarded heart with just his smile. As she begins to fall in love with Vincent, Kate discovers that he's a revenant--an undead being whose fate forces him to sacrifice himself over and over again to save the lives of others. Vincent and those like him are bound in a centuries-old war against a group of evil revenants who exist only to murder and betray. Kate soon realizes that if she follows her heart, she may never be safe again.
My review : This is going to be a mixed review. When I started Die For Me I wasn't hooked. Die for me is a quick read but this is not an awesome book. The plot was really easy and familiar. I've read about this kind of plot so many times in YA paranormal books so it annoyed me at the beginning. I found the characters at first not really interesting and stereotypical (especially Kate's sister). Lots of cliché about France too but that was funny.
But I did like some things and that's why I'm going to read the next book.
I was really surprised and happy that I did like this book because I'm not a fan of zombies books. But I liked the whole idea and story around the revenants and numa. It was really interesting. They are not like the "real" zombies they have more similarities with angels and fallen angels... I love the idea that you're becoming a revenant if you die for someone and on the contrary you're becoming a numa if you betrayed someone. There was just this things about the revenant being volant and dead during 3 days that was very weird... But otherwise I liked the revenants. I didn't hate a zombie book and that's something for me !
I was also really curious and I wanted to read this book because it's rare that an american or british author is writing a YA book set in France. She is giving us such a vivid picture of Paris she managed to give us the atmosphere of this beautiful city. I love Paris <3. But I bought this book especially because I'm going to meet the author in Paris.
I liked that the revenants story was linked with France's history and WW2. I also liked the heroine Kate especially her love for art, museum and books.
What I loved the most about Die For is the writing. I was enraptured by Plum's romantic writing.
The end is perhaps a little too perfect and too much but I liked it. I guess that the romantic part of me wants some books like that from time to time.
So yes I'm going to read the second book Until I die. I loved Die for me even more after reading Vincent point of view chapter on Amy Plum website.
Another YA book set in Paris that I loved : Anna and the french kiss by Stephanie Perkins.

Hi dear ^.^
ReplyDeleteI also like Amy Plum's Zombies a lot and the numa concept too ^_^ I totally agree that the author gives a very vivid picture of France. I meant, I havent been there yet, but I could really smell the croissants from here! lol =P
